A Helicone alternative for LLM cost tracking

Helicone has been in maintenance mode since March 2026. If you used it to see what your LLM calls cost, LLMtrack gives you AI cost tracking per feature, model and customer from one async call. If you used it as a gateway, keep a gateway and send its traces to LLMtrack.

Quick answer

For cost tracking, LLMtrack replaces Helicone without sitting in your request path, and it adds cost per customer against what they pay you. For caching, rate limits and fallbacks, move to a gateway such as LiteLLM, OpenRouter or Cloudflare AI Gateway and connect it to LLMtrack. LLMtrack doesn't route or cache requests itself.

Why Helicone users are looking for an alternative

Helicone joined Mintlify. Its announcement says the service "will remain live for the foreseeable future in maintenance mode", with security patches, support for new models, and bug and performance fixes still shipping.

Nothing breaks today. But a tool in maintenance mode won't add the things a growing bill needs: per-customer margin, a forecast, or advice on which model to move to. That's the gap people are filling.

Who should switch, and who should stay

SWITCH TO LLMTRACK IF

  • You opened Helicone mostly to see costs
  • You need cost per feature and per customer, with margin
  • You'd rather nothing sat between your app and the provider

STAY, OR PICK A GATEWAY, IF

  • Helicone's caching or rate limits are doing real work for you
  • You need to read full request and response logs
  • Maintenance mode is fine for your timeline

How to switch from Helicone

  1. 01

Point your base URL back at the provider

Remove gateway.helicone.ai from your client config. If you need a gateway for caching or fallbacks, set up LiteLLM cost tracking, OpenRouter cost tracking or Cloudflare AI Gateway cost tracking instead. Each connects to LLMtrack with one URL and no SDK.

  2. 02

Install the SDK and add one line

Using the Node and Python LLM cost tracking SDKs:

    npm install llmtrack

import { LLMtrack, fromOpenAIUsage } from 'llmtrack'
    const llmtrack = new LLMtrack({ apiKey: process.env.LLMTRACK_API_KEY,
      onError: (e) => console.warn(e.code, e.message) })

const res = await openai.chat.completions.create({ model, messages })
    llmtrack.track({ provider: 'openai', model: res.model,
      feature: 'summarizer', customerId: 'acme-corp',
      ...fromOpenAIUsage(res.usage) })
  3. 03

    Name your features

Give each call site its own feature. If every call is named "chat", you get one bar. The guide to tracking LLM costs in production covers naming.

Helicone's history doesn't move over. LLMtrack starts from your next request, priced in under a second.

Questions

Is Helicone shutting down?

Not according to Helicone. Its 3 March 2026 post says the service stays live in maintenance mode, with security patches, new-model support and bug fixes.

Does LLMtrack replace Helicone's gateway?

No. LLMtrack doesn't route, cache or rate-limit requests. Pair it with a gateway if you need those, and LLMtrack reads the gateway's traces.

Will my prompts leave my servers?

No. The SDK sends token counts, the model, a feature name and an optional customer ID. It has no field for prompts or responses.

What does it cost to switch?

The free plan covers 3,000 requests a month with every feature. Pro is $11.99 a month for 25,000 requests and 90 days of history.
